Howard Langford is an electronics genius and CEO of Langford Technologies, the most successful name in virtual reality entertainment.  Though idolized by video game fans, he is nobody's idea of a hero.  Indeed, heroics are the farthest thing from his mind as he drives home from the nation's premier consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.  Exhausted from the trip and a series of strange nightmares that has plagued him for several days, he has thoughts only for a hot meal, and the comforts of home.

Before his journey is complete, however, Howard will be called upon to perform acts of personal sacrifice and endurance he never previously believed possible, when he falls asleep at the wheel of his car, only to awaken on a road he does not recognize.

Howard soon discovers he is no longer in the world he knows, but is now traveling upon an alien highway, a road that takes him through a dark and dangerous dimension, one where his darkest dreams have the ability to become reality.  Worse still, Howard learns his passage was no mere accident, but the will of a malignant entity who has targeted him as its prey.

Fighting for both his sanity and his life, Howard races to find a way back to his own world before the denizens of this nightmare realm can claim his for their own.  From roving bands of carnivorous marsupials, to the inhabitants of the strange town of Splitsville, to the hell that is the City of Mutants, Howard is tested to the limits of both his body and mind, as he races toward a final confrontation with the evil force that has brought him to its feeding ground, a force that can bend the very laws of nature to its will.

Thrust into a hostile world, Howard is given no choice but to discover its secrets, and find his way back to his own dimension before he becomes just another victim of highway hypnosis.
