Why Horror?

Greetings all,

I sometimes get asked why I chose to write in the Horror genre.  I used to say I was a Horror author, although through time, that self-identification seems a bit thin – I seem to write more from a psychological perspective, spending a good amount of time on the internal workings of the various characters who are dealing with some event that undermines their reality in some way.

I think we read horror because for some of us, we NEED to be scared. It’s our way of confronting our fears. Our fear and uncertainty of death, of the unknown, and of nightmares. By confronting these things, which often concern things we have yet to understand, we can find a certain kind of peace, or at least convince ourselves that we have some sort of control over the uncontrollable. I think it is
much the same for those of us who write it. While there are many different motivations for writing, I think horror carries with it a certain allure, attractive to only a small percentage of writers. Those of us who write horror not only feel the need to understand those things ourselves, but also feel the need to carry that feeling and understanding to others.

Perhaps it’s more than that. Perhaps it is a carryover from a much earlier time in our genetic history, when the night was filled with creatures and dangers we cannot imagine today. After all, fear is one of man’s strongest emotions, and from both a scientific and evolutionary standpoint, one of the most useful, for it is fear that kept early man alive, and that helps us to survive even today. Perhaps
that need for fear is also a need to control that fear, to provide us with some sort of comfort against the fear we all possess, deep on our hearts, of death. Perhaps the ability to face those fears through writing, gives us the same sort of comfort as those that defy death by thrill-seeking. By facing those things we are afraid of, we give ourselves strength to face the greater darkness.

I think, for me, it is all of these things and more. I grew up in an unusual environment, one where I experienced things that neither I, nor logic, could explain, things that I often refer to as ones that would make Stephen King shit himself in fear. Why? Because while they were unexplainable, they were also REAL. As real as any other experience, such as eating or breathing or taking a piss. I began to study those experiences, those phenomena, and through those studies, learned a great deal about what we perceive as ‘reality’. So, writing about them is both a form of therapy, a coping mechanism of sorts, as well as a means of expression.

Just my thoughts…

So Many Hats…

Greetings all,

As usual, it has been a time of too many hats, not enough time.  In between trying to maintain my happy home, I’ve been working on my other artistic path, that of the painted furniture I’ve been doing for a good part of my life now, and recreating the website for it after problems with my last web host.  I also discovered, quite by chance, that although this website functions as I designed, I could not send email from this site to certain domain addresses.  This was due to a reverse DNS issue, and could only be partially solved from my end.  Fortunately for me, my current web host is much more on top of things when it comes to technical issues, and this problem has now been resolved.

Also recently, I discovered my books have have automatically added to Goodreads.  This was something of a surprise, as I had problems with them in the past regarding my identity.  This problem has also been resolved, and I am now an official GoodReads Author.  My profile for that site can be found here.  Since then, I have also received several reviews for my books, including 2 5-star reviews, which is always a good thing.  I hope it’s a trend that continues.

Well folks, time for me to return to the ether and engage in yet another project.  I hope this finds all of you well.

Until Next Time,

Writing News – October 2026

Greetings,

Wow…time sure does fly.  It’s already been a month since I posted my last update, and the days have been a blur.  As some know, I am not a full-time writer…well..I am and I’m not.  I put in a good number of hours every week working on both my websites – this one, for my writing, and Reincarnations.com for my functional art, which is a large portfolio site that requires a good amount of work, creating slide shows for each of the many works that have come out of that studio over the years as well as content.  I write updates on the blogs for both sites, as well as managing YouTube channels for both, creating and editing content for both.  Add to this the daily behind the scenes stuff, like checking and answering emails, looking for promotional opportunities, etc., and you end up with what amounts to a full-time job.

But, as most independent artists and authors know, these passions take time to mature, and often take some time before they become financially supportive. Like most, it is necessary for me to find additional work in order to make ends meet, and combined, this takes a good amount of time and energy.  As most are aware, I am disabled due to narcissistic/domestic and legal abuse at the hands of my former wife, where I was the victim of false allegations after a decade of abuse.  The treatment I received as a result of this exacerbated my injuries suffered during a horrific near-fatal auto accident some years ago.  Sadly, disability does not pay my bills – especially after said former wife had my payments cut nearly in half.  So, I have no choice but to attempt to find employment once again, despite dealing with severe neuropathy and chronic pain, among other things.  Combined, it occupies long weeks of long days. I get to what I can as soon as can.

Yeah, so there’s that

This is why, in the midst of more activities than I can count, I am working on two writing projects simultaneously.  The first is a screenplay of my third novel, and the second is an account of the events I described above, a great part of which is comprised of a transcribed account of those events from a journal I kept during the time.  It will be my first non-fiction work, and will be directed towards the corruption of the family court system, which gives incentive to protect those making false allegations against men.  This book will not be an easy read – more than your usual ‘prison memoir’, it was written contemporaneously, as the events unfolded.  It is even harder to write, as many of the events trigger memories and emotions forced away years ago.  Needless to say, it is a book that might anger those mentioned in it; I suspect there will even be those who try to prevent its publication. I wouldn’t be surprised, knowing the nature of those involved.

But they can all kiss my ass. Like it or not, I plan on telling my story. Hopefully, it will help someone avoid what happened to me.

All these projects are moving forward, while I also attempt to keep my somewhat happy home.  I’ll keep updating as they do.

Until Next Time,
